Wallflowers

Tiny movement inviting a large curiosity

During this project I was interested in the repetition of a simple movement. I had originally tried working with muscle wire, but there were a few problems working with it at the desired scale.

The idea behind this piece is that on top there would have been a bunch of flowers that all look and move the same, and below there would have been the little components (or personalities as I like to think of them). Though, I had a lot of trouble connecting the wires from the flowers and having the little components all on the crankshaft, so in the end I separated them.

Also, one of my favourite artists is Joseph Cornell, and this is where my interest in working with boxes and small components grew.

some old prototypes.
The first two on the left are made with muscle wire, but there was a problem with using such a small length of it and the amount of power to see visible movement.
The last one is regular wire with a crankshaft

I tried so hard to get the metal flowers to work, but I just need to have a straighter crankshaft. So hello again paper flowers.
